After a terrible review of one of his sermons on a Christian website, Adam has a crisis of faith which, to Alex’s surprise, seems more serious than his usual biannual episodes of doubt. While he’s at home experimenting with leaving the cloth by sitting in his pants watching daytime telly and gambling on the internet, someone else is going around the parish impersonating a vicar to get free beers and avoid parking tickets. Adam’s meltdown comes to a head when he drunkenly comes on to Ellie at a Vicars and Tarts party in aid of the school library – and Alex finally snaps.

I was moved to tears by episode six. Over recent weeks, I have developed a concern for the characters and wish them well. Tonight’s portrayal of a crisis of faith touch my inner self – I would say my soul, if I had one. I was Christian for 40 years. Then I finally saw though the nonsense and quietly explained to my wife, to my children and to my colleagues that I was now atheist. But what if I was a vicar? How could I let down my congregation and my bishop and give up my income? I suspect there are many Adams out there, weeping with me tonight.
